Don't Wait For Winter - Get Started Now to Downsize Before the Holidays

If you’re anything like me, there are some things you wish you’d done sooner. I think most people struggle with waiting to do important things — especially when the task at hand isn’t especially fun. One thing I’ve learned from my experiences helping people sell their homes and downsize to a new place is that it can be at once exciting and a source of stress. Often downsizing is an event my clients are genuinely looking forward to, but the task loses its luster when you wait until an inopportune time to get started. Moving is a big task, and if you’ve lived in your home for a long time, a little planning can go a long way when it comes time to start packing your things.

Getting a head start on projects is easier said than done — it’s true, but now is the time to start planning your move if you want to sell your place and move into your new apartment or community by the time the holidays roll around. It might seem like August is too early to start thinking about the holidays, but the fact of the matter is that December will be here before you know it. Start planning for the winter now, and give yourself some cushion. Are you selling your home to move into something more suited to your lifestyle? Here are some actions you can take this month to help you start preparing to downsize by winter.

Make a list of the top three properties you are interested in moving into. Make a pros-and-cons list, and figure out which communities are the most viable to move into and which might be more difficult — considering availability, proximity to your family, etc. Once you have your top three places, you can begin making phone calls to find out the earliest available vacancy.

Consult with family, friends, and call us here at Home Downsizing Solutions for professional advice on how to sell your home. Whatever you are dealing with — whether it be finding help moving your belongings, or needing to leave your belongings in your home while your house sells — we have a solution for you. Don’t try to do everything on your own.

Note the essential items you want to take with you in the move and the things you are considering selling, donating, or leaving at your home. Is there anything on your list that you could move to the do-not-bring list? Downsizing usually means moving into a new home with less space for your stuff, so being proactive about how you organize things now will save you a lot of headache in the future. Hopefully, by the time the holidays arrive, the only boxes you’ll be too concerned with are the ones you’ll be giving to the grandkids to open on Christmas morning.

Good luck in your new adventure. If you have any questions about how to get started selling your home while it’s still summertime, please give us a call. We’ve got many resources at our disposal, and can answer any questions you might have. We look forward to chatting with you!
